My name is Cynthia, and I am a 63-year-old woman living with SMA and using a wheelchair. I have always valued living life to the fullest, especially with my daughter, who is a hospice nurse, and my two wonderful grandchildren. Unfortunately, my journey has become much more challenging lately. My van broke down, and I could only afford to buy an ATV ramp to get in and out of my vehicle. While I am grateful for any solution, the ramp is not safe—especially in Buffalo, New York, where it is often rainy or snowy. I have fallen off the ramp a few times, and when the weather is bad, I simply cannot get to my medical appointments or travel with my family.
I am currently facing not only the challenges of SMA but also undergoing treatment for invasive skin cancer, which has begun to invade my nerves and requires surgery and radiation therapy. Reliable transportation is essential for me to attend my surgery, radiation appointments, and other necessary treatments. A van with a lift would mean I could get to my appointments safely, no matter the weather, and continue to be present for my family. It would also allow me to enjoy more moments with my daughter and grandchildren, making memories that mean everything to us.
Thank you for reading my story. Please consider sharing your story or making a donation. Your support would make a world of difference in helping me regain my independence and continue living life to the fullest.
